Biblical counseling is discipleship-focused counseling that relies on the sufficiency of Scripture to address the full range of human problems. It involves:

• Using Scripture as the primary source for understanding human nature, problems, and solutions
• Recognizing that all problems (sin and suffering) have a spiritual component and are ultimately the result of mankind’s fall into sin
• Accepting the sufficiency of Scripture to provide all that we need to know in order to live a life pleasing to God
• Focusing on heart transformation rather than just behavior modification
• Emphasizing the gospel and its implications for daily living
• Relying upon the Holy Spirit to empower the change that God requires
• Working within the context of the local church

Biblical counselors believe that God's Word provides the framework and wisdom needed to help people with their struggles, whether emotional, relational, or behavioral. While they acknowledge the reality of physical and mental health issues, they approach counseling through a biblical worldview that seeks to apply scriptural truth to all aspects of life.
